Phikeia. The first step.

Once the decision has been made to say “Yes!,” to Phi Delta Theta, the new member enters a trial period that allows an opportunity for him to truly get to know the Fraternity and for the Fraternity to truly get to know him. The Phikeia stage is a period of education, filled with positive and encouraging preparation for the responsibilities of membership that reaffirms the principles of Phi Delta Theta. After the Phikiea Education program, if both party’s values and expectations are in sync, Phikeias become initiated into full membership – and that’s where the real journey of a lifetime begins.

Hazing….. Not Tolerated

Phi Delta Theta does not condone any form of hazing. It is contrary to the purpose of fraternity, let alone Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Members can still achieve a close group of men throughout the organization without hazing and Phi Delta Theta General Headquarters offers resources to help transplant negative activities with positive ones.

Phi Delta Theta encourages family members to discuss hazing and other new member practices. Family members have the unique opportunity to speak one-on-one about the dangers of hazing.

Our Phikeia Education

The term “Phikeia” may confuse you. It’s our given title to a man who is pledging himself to the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. It’s a term of respect, and that is why we use it instead of “pledge”.

This falls inline with our Zero Tolerance for Hazing policy. The purpose of hazing is to break people down in order to build them up again the way a particular chapter wants them to be, but it’s not right. Phi Delta Theta has no need for that. We recruit men who already have their bases covered, and who already have their ducks lined up in a row. A man of Phi Delta Theta will bring his own unique perspective to the table, and contribute in a meaningful way to the chapter when we all come together.

That being said, navigating your first year in College comes with a lot of hidden pitfalls and sources of trouble that can be troublesome even for the brightest students. Our Phikeia Education process is thorough. It helps you navigate through the University of Washington as a scholar, as a leader, and as a balanced man in general. Perhaps even more important, our Phikeia education program will teach you the history of our Fraternity, both nationally and locally. These are things that any self-respecting Phi Delt needs to know, and our Phikeia education program will help you become assimilated into our brotherhood, the Greek Community, and the broaded University of Washington.

When the 10 week program is concluded, you will feel like you are a part of something greater than yourself. That much we can guarantee you.
